English Cemetery of Real del Monte

Built in 1851 by the English miners who arrived in Real del Monte, the English Cemetery is one of the most intriguing gems of this Pueblo Mágico.
Along its quiet pathways rest 755 tombs, all aligned and oriented toward England… all except one: the famous grave of Richard Bell, whose mystery has fueled legends for generations.
The story begins in 1824, when British migrants arrived in these mountains after a corporation purchased the mines from the descendants of the Count of Regla, Don Pedro Romero de Terreros. Real del Monte was going through difficult times, but the arrival of the English revived the town’s economy, mining industry, and even its cultural life.
Why did they adapt so quickly? Because when they arrived, they found an unexpected home: cold weather, mist, forests, and mountains… a landscape that reminded them of their native Cornwall.
Here, surrounded by hills and low-hanging clouds, they would often say: “It feels just like home.”
And perhaps that’s why this cemetery has such a special charm: walking among its tombstones is like traveling through two worlds at once—the mining history of Real del Monte and the English memory that still breathes among the trees.
Do you know the legend of Richard Bell? His grave is the only one that breaks the alignment. Some say it was rebellion, others claim it was punishment, and some even speak of love…
This iconic cemetery is a unique showcase of British architecture, living history, and a mystique that captures you from the very first step.
